Traffic-calming structure to be built

Project Overview

Exciting improvements are coming to our community! Construction will soon begin on a new roundabout at the intersection of 7 Mile Road, Sheldon Road, and Center Street to improve traffic flow and safety. The intersection is a key entry point for the City that currently sees congestion, speed concerns, and limited facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists. Addressing this intersection became a critical focus due to the pending Downs Development. This intersection project will prioritize safety for all users, improve traffic flow, and create a context that matches the community’s vision. The project also includes improvements of 7 Mile Road, Wing Street, and St. Lawrence Boulevard.

Anticipated Project Schedule:

  • Design Complete – 2025
  • Contractor Bidding & Award – Summer 2025
  • Construction Start – August 2025
  • Open to Traffic – Late November 2025
  • Final restoration – Spring 2026

Project Elements:

  • A concrete single-lane roundabout at 7 Mile Rd / Sheldon Rd / Center St, including separated right-turn lanes on the east and south legs.
  • 7 Mile Rd / Wing St / St Lawrence Blvd upgrades. Asphalt resurfacing and striping.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, including reduced crossing distances, bicycle on/off ramps, and enhanced signing/striping.
  • Large truck accommodations.

Project Background

The City of Northville has partnered with OHM Advisors to design and provide contract administration for a roundabout at the intersection of 7 Mile Road, Sheldon Road, and Center Street. OHM worked closely with the City Council, City Planning Commission and the City’s citizen-led Mobility Network Task Force to understand the community’s priorities, share concepts, and incorporate feedback. Coordination with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), and The Downs Developer has been ongoing.  The City has also partnered with Wayne County for their input and direction on this project, as the County has ultimate jurisdiction of the intersection.

Learn More About Roundabouts!

Benefits of a Roundabout:

  • Lower speeds (15-25 mph)
  • Safer, shorter, and more visible pedestrian crossings
  • Dedicated space for bicyclists
  • Reduced number of conflict points (i.e. locations where vehicle and pedestrian paths cross each other)
  • Smooth, steady, and efficient traffic flow

    How to Navigate a Roundabout:

The following provides a brief overview of how to navigate the roundabout. Check out this video for a guide on how to navigate a roundabout.

  • Vehicles
    • Slow down as you approach a roundabout.
    • Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists.
    • Yield at the entry to vehicles already in the roundabout, they have the right-of-way.
    • If there is traffic present in the roundabout, wait for an opening and then enter the roundabout. Note that traffic only moves counterclockwise through the roundabout.
    • Once you’ve entered the roundabout, do not stop. Use your right-hand turn signal to exit the roundabout.
    • If you see an emergency vehicle, exit the roundabout and then pull over. Do not pull over in the roundabout.
  • Pedestrians
    • Pedestrians should only cross at designated crosswalks.
    • Wait for a safe gap in traffic flow before crossing.
    • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
    • Cross only one lane of traffic at a time, using the splitter islands to safely wait for the next lane of traffic to clear.
    • Do not walk into the center of the roundabout.
  • Bicyclists
    • Bicyclists that are comfortable riding in vehicular traffic should navigate the roundabout as a vehicle would. Yield to pedestrians and vehicles in the roundabout. Use hand signals to show your intention and only navigate counterclockwise through the roundabout.
    • Bicyclists that do not want to ride with traffic through the roundabout should use the exit ramps provided, dismount and walk their bike using the pedestrian walkways.
