Fire Department

The Northville City Fire Department provides fire suppression, basic life support (BLS) EMS, fire prevention and inspection services and public education for the cities of Northville and Plymouth, Michigan, operating out of three stations. The Department is staffed by a full-time chief and 60 part-time, paid-on-call firefighters and EMS responders. The Northville Plymouth Fire Advisory Board, which consists of elected and appointed officials from each City, provides input into the operation of the department.

Between the two cities, the department serves an area of 4.5 square miles and a residential population of 15,000. The department responds to approximately 1,600 calls for service each year.

The Fire Department is an active participant in the Western Wayne County Fire Department Mutual Aid Association, whose members include more than 20 municipalities in Western Wayne and Southwestern Oakland Counties. The association supports a Special Operations Group consisting of a Hazardous Materials Response Team and a Technical Rescue (USAR) team, and the department contributes members to both teams. Automatic Mutual Aid arrangements are in place with neighboring communities, which allow us to share resources on a pre-arranged basis in response to structure fires. The department also participates in HEMS, Inc., the Medical Control Authority for Western Wayne County.

The department has partnered with two private advanced life support (ALS) providers as a part of a team approach to emergency medical response. Community EMS (CEMS) responds to EMS calls in Northville, while Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) responds to calls in Plymouth.

The department is headed by Chief Matthew Samhat. He is assisted by a staff of two captains and six lieutenants.
